| April, 2001:
April 29, 2001: This weekend was great! You don't always judge a hunt by the game collected! I had the opportunity to spend the weekend with Lance, his friend David Cook and David's dad, Bill Cook. A special thanks to them for their gracious hospitality and especially David's fine cooking. This was a hunt I will remember for a long time. We did see a lone turkey, but it never came within range. Hunt with your kids and friends, it just doesn't get any better than that. The picture below is a good representation of what we were looking to find. Oh yes, I came within a foot or so of harvesting a good gobbler with my truck on the way home, about 2 miles from the house. I guess, that's why they call it hunting.
April 27, 2001: Thanks to David and Judy Young of Pancake Hill for allowing me to take these pictures to share with you. It was easy, since these turkeys are pretty domesticated. I will try to bring you some pictures of the wild things after this weekend.
April 26, 2001: This weekend, Lance, my youngest son and I are going to join David Cook and his Dad on a turkey hunt near Eastland, Texas. This should be interesting, because all of us would be considered real novice turkey callers. I will let you know how it goes. Old Doug Crabtree, told me that hunting turkeys in the late season is easier than the early season. This is due to the lack of hens available for breeding. So get out there, take your kid hunting, let me know the results. Doug,
did it!!!
April 24, 2001:
Doug Crabtree of Ohio and his dad set out to do what no other father son
team have done, as far as we know. They both were going after the
North American Grand Slam of Wild Turkeys, with a bow and all in one hunting
season. Young Doug collected his final leg of his Grand Slam in Kansas
when he harvested a Eastern. Old Doug still has time. He only
needs one more bird. He has successfully harvested the Osceola, Rio
Grande and Merriam and only needs to Eastern. My money is on the
Crabtree's to be successful. Read a more detailed accounting of the
hunt at Bowhunting.net
April 23, 2001: Thanks to Paul of Magnum Hunts and Taxidermy of Australia for sending us the picture above. I would also like to thank Paul for his kind words about our site. It is nice to know that the Texas Deer Hunter family is growing to include those as far away as Australia. Paul has sent other pictures, that I will get posted for you at a later date.
April 20, 2001: William Sykes sent in this picture of a hog he killed while hunting with Dennis Wynn of Moos Ranch near San Antonio. There is always something to hunt, if you are looking. This hog sure looks bigger than 200 lbs. to me. Thanks to William for sharing this picture with all of us in the Texas Deer Hunter family. April 19, 2001: The signs just keep on coming. Today, I was was just a little east of Jonesboro, Texas and there was a deer standing by the fence near the side of the road, a close look revealed antler growth. This means what? There are a lot of people who might share some information with us on this matter and hopefully they will. Is it normal to see antler development this early? Does early development, if it is early, mean bigger horns this fall? I hope it means more and bigger bucks. How about you? Keep your eyes open and let me know what you see. A special thanks to James Holdbrook. James is a new visitor to our site and was kind enough to send a complimentary note on his thoughts about this site. April 18, 2001: The second sign that our antlered friends are getting their new antlers was seen today. Some elk on a game ranch near Meridian, Texas were sporting new antler growth. There were two, that I could see. They had already forked. If you remember, we saw whitetail with new antler growth back in mid March. I love to see the antlers coming back. I'll try to get some pictures and pass them on as the antlers start developing. " Remember to e-mail me if you are interested in an inexpensive Blackbuck hunt".
April 16, 2001: The ram pictured above is one of many exotics you can hunt, NOW!!! Exotic hunting is not near as expensive, as you may have thought. If you would be interested in an inexpensive Blackbuck hunt, drop me an e-mail. Turkey season is still going and there are many species of exotics you can hunt. So get out there and do some hunting before it gets hot. Ultimate Safaris
April 14, 2001: It was early morning and Young Doug made the sound of a Great Barred Owl as a turkey locator. That's when the owl pictured above came and joined the serenade. They called back and forth for several minutes and drove the turkeys crazy. I asked why the turkeys respond to the call of the Great Barred Owl. I was told, "The Barred owl eats little turkeys, the gobblers remember that and are now bigger than the owl, so the turkey is saying come on over here, and I will beat the socks off of you". Well, something like that. It made listening to the exchange between the owl and the gobbler a lot more interesting.
April 13, 2001: There is a story to go with Leroy's turkey, but I have not had a chance to go over it yet. Will try to get this done shortly. All reports coming in on the turkey hunting are good. The Crabtree duo has gone to Oklahoma and reported that there are a lot of turkeys. Robert Hoague and I are going to see if we can sneak away and go join the excitement.
April 12, 2001: Scott Henkel sent me this picture of his turkey taken on a recent hunt. Congratulations to Scott. You can tell they are all pretty happy. Tomorrow, we will find out how Leroy Sisco did on trying to get his turkey
April 11, 2001: It is great when fellow hunters share their pictures with you. Leroy Sisco sent me this picture of a turkey he saw on a recent hunt. He is hunting with a bow. Was he able to collect this trophy? We will see tomorrow. Maybe, he will write us a story about what did or didn't happen.
April 10, 2001: One of the greatest things about what I do , is being able to hunt with masters of their trade. They will share their secrets of success, only after you earn their trust. I am glad, I was able to have one with so much knowledge share it with me. "Old" Doug was kind enough to film some short segments for you, that will be aired in our coming season. A Special Thanks to "Old" Doug and "Young" Doug for sharing so much, that I can pass on to you.
April 9, 2001: Doug is pictured above holding the turkey pictured , below. This was opening day and the turkeys were very vocal. Since, they have become silent partners in our hunts. I will be back with old Doug this evening. Can he keep up with young Doug? I wouldn't bet against him.
April 8, 2001: Young Doug Crabtree did it!! The second leg of his Grand Slam of N. American Wild Turkeys is complete. I am on my way to hunt with old Doug as they try to become a father & son team who both get a Turkey Grand Slam in 30 days with a Bow.
April 6, 2001: The lucky hunters will see something like the picture above in the morning, as Spring Turkey season opens in the Central Texas area. Turkey hunting has become a very popular sport in Texas, thanks to the increased numbers. I will be hunting with Doug Crabtree and Robert Hoague as Doug goes for the Rio Grande Turkey as the second leg of his Grande Slam. He has already been successful in harvesting an Osceola Turkey (pictured below).

A Common scene this time of year, "no horns" April 5, 2001: A common scene this time of year is deer and no antlers, this is fixin' to change. There was a deer seen growing his new antlers in March. This is not common, but many of the bucks will start developing their new head gear the end of this month. I am going to be at Rancho Del Zorro around the middle of the month, maybe we will get an idea while in S. Texas. April 3, 2001: Turkey season is almost here. In short, it is hunting season again, as you can tell by the "Upcoming Hunts" listings in the center column. This is an excellent time to head to the lease and start a spring food plot or check on the condition of you stands and feeders after the winter season. It has been real wet winter and water is one of the most damaging elements on our hunting equipment. ..
Deer at War April 2, 2001: The deer above were captured during a fight, their hoofs were slapping so hard you could here them 200 yards away. This was one of many interesting deer sightings on my recent trip to Greystone Castle. |
